The Convenors, Clive Harper and John Saunders, and the Congress Organizing Committee look forward to your participating in the ISBRA 2006 World Congress on Alcohol Research. The Congress is the premier event of ISBRA - the International Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism.

This year's Congress will take place from September 10 to 13, 2006. It will be held at the Sofitel Wentworth Hotel, which is in the central business district of Sydney, near Sydney Harbour. The Congress will be complemented by several satellite conferences and workshops.

The main ISBRA Congress will have five major themes, which are organized into five simultaneous streams. They are:

  • The neuroscience of addiction
  • Mechanisms of end-organ damage
  • Research into treatment and other interventions
  • Alcohol and comorbid disorders
  • Epidemiology and public health

Scientists, clinicians and health professionals from around the world will be gathering in Sydney for the Congress. The Congress will be particularly relevant to laboratory scientists, clinical researchers, clinicians who treat people with alcohol-related disorders, policy makers and public health professionals. On Sunday September 10th there are several symposia of particular relevance to clinicians, who might not be able to participate in the Congress as a whole.

The keynote speakers include T-K Li, Director of the U.S National Institute on Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse, Marc Schuckit from the USA (winner of this year's Jellinek Award), Ian Kitchen from Britain, A Yokoyama from Japan and Sarah Dunlop from Australia.

The Congress is supported by many governmental and commercials organizations around the world. Major supporters include the National Institute on Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse, DrinkWise Australia and the Commonwealth of Australia Department Health and Ageing.

    Sydney Ranked World's Best City
Australia's biggest city, Sydney, has again been named the world's best city by readers of the U.S magazine Travel and Leisure. It is the eighth time in ten years that Sydney has topped the list.

Sydney's delights include its spectacular harbour and the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, the Botanical Gardens, the Aquarium, the Australian Museum, Centre Point Tower, Chinatown, Woolloomooloo wharf, the Queen Victoria Building, Taronga Zoo, Bondi Beach and Hyde Park.

Stay a few extra days and explore the Blue Mountains and the Hunter Valley, and more distantly the Great Barrier Reef and Ayers Rock.
